Lydian is a newly established renewable energy development company specializing in the development and construction of utility-scale solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in North America. Lydian owns 9 development assets, consisting of both solar and storage, with several expected to reach NTP during 2024-2025. Lydian also has a significant existing pipeline of additional projects.

Lydian is backed by Excelsior Energy Capital (“EEC”), a leading private equity fund manager with more than $1.0 billion in assets under management, that is exclusively focused on north American middle market renewables investing. Through its relationship with EEC, Lydian has access to (i) a specialized team of value-add investor-operators with decades of renewables development, construction, and transaction experience, (ii) committed discretionary equity capital, strong relationships with debt and tax equity investors, and deep experience structuring tax equity and project financings, and (iii) a mature and proprietary financing and procurement strategy that significantly enhances expected project returns.

Job Scope

As the Origination and Power Marketing Director, you will actively contribute to defining the power off-take strategy and engaging in market outreach to originate off-take opportunities.   

Essential Functions

  • Originate off-take opportunities through strategic outreach campaigns driven by systematic research and analysis of the customer base and market. 

  • Negotiate and close off-take contracts primarily consisting of PPAs but potentially including wholesale power, energy, capacity, ancillary services, and environmental attribute contracts. 

  • Analyze demand signals in regulated and unregulated markets by reviewing integrated resource plans, transmission development plans, and macroeconomic drivers of market load growth. 

  • Support the company's power off-take strategy for individual projects, developing revenue strategies to maximize project value and implement financeable off-take structures. 

  • Conduct market research and engage with market participants to assess energy, REC, and capacity pricing across various ISO and non-ISO markets. 

  • Independently identify and assess off-take leads through direct prospecting and networking efforts, establishing lasting client relationships in the renewable energy sector, including identifying RFP opportunities and originating bilateral PPA targets. 

  • Stay informed about various off-take structures and advise on their suitability for projects in the development pipeline, including physical PPAs, virtual PPAs, utility sleeved transactions, capacity contracts, and tolling agreements. 

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to position projects that are matured in the development process for off-take opportunities. 

  • Work internally with development, legal, finance & accounting, and technical teams to coordinate and support the preparation and submission of off-take proposals in response to RFPs. 

  • Support due diligence efforts for various project acquisition opportunities by assessing off-take feasibility at project locations and providing pricing inputs for financial modeling. You will report to the Chief Development Officer. 

Additional duties relevant to a role of this nature

  • Create value across the existing project pipeline, conducting customer research, understanding market regulatory frameworks for off-take, and influencing off-take strategies for solar PV, hybrid (PV + BESS), and standalone BESS projects. 

  • Engage with the select primary markets (MISO, SPP, ERCOT and WECC) and secondary markets (PJM, CAISO, NYISO), interacting with internal teams, consultants and external stakeholders including customers, intermediaries, consultants, and off-take advisory groups.  

  • Lead market strategy based on fundamentals, market trends and policy, giving Lydian Energy a competitive advantage when acquiring, developing and delivering projects at or above market margins. 

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; MBA in Finance preferred. 

  • Minimum of 10 years of overall business experience in the energy industry, with at least 5 years (preferably 7-10 years) in project off-take (energy, RECs, and capacity) 

  • Strong relationships with potential off-take counterparties (IOUs or other LSEs, Corporates, CCAs, Financials). 

  • Understanding of US power markets with the ability to evaluate and provide insights into evolving market conditions. 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of power market concepts, including physical and virtual PPAs, hedges, curtailment, SCED, basis risk, PRS, Resource Adequacy, deliverability, and power and commodity price curves is essential. 

  • Proficient in Excel-based modeling and data manipulation within complex financial models and databases preferred.

  • Efficient, diligent, and effective work ethic to accomplish key responsibilities promptly. 

  • Strong attention to detail to organize and manage multiple project tasks. 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as organizational abilities. 

  • Proficiency in building cross-cultural relationships and influencing stakeholders at all levels. 

  • Flexible and collaborative approach with a well-developed team spirit. 

  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
